Fail to Fly

Failure is part of the process of growth. To start an architecture or design firm, you first need to overcome the fear of failing. Alli has big dreams to fly like other birds.

"It may not be today, tomorrow, or next week,
But I will learn to fly with my own technique.
I’ll soar above oceans, forests, hills, and peaks,
And see how others try to acheive what they seek."

But Alli isn’t ready to fly. She still has a lot of growing to do. So how can she continue without losing heart?

  1. Patience

  2. Practice

  3. Perspective

Patience will allow space to grow and time to learn. Most things don’t happen in a day - they take time. If starting your own business is your big goal, consider taking one small step every day towards that great big goal. It can be as simple as reading an article, writing down future best practice strategies, calling an ideal client, or reading articles from Flying Solo.

Practice good habits so they become second nature. If you wait to do your best work for yourself instead of your current employer - you will lose more than you could possibly gain. So practice good communication. Be on time and meet deadlines. Give it your all. Those daily habits will make your future practice even more successful.

Perspective is key to finding your own way. Seek out other architects or designers who do what you hope to do. Or go beyond architecture and explore how other professions serve their clients or complete their projects. Architecture and design professions have wonderful traditions - but there is room for innovation and growth in this new millennium.
